Bretton is a residential area and civil parish in the city of Peterborough, Cambridgeshire. Bretton has been designed as a green environment; the major roads are tree-lined and there are several large parks and playing fields.

History

Peterborough was designated a New Town in 1967 and Bretton was created as the city's first township; its construction began in 1970.

Governance

Bretton is represented on Peterborough City Council by three councillors for the North Bretton ward and one for the South Bretton ward.[1] Bretton is part of the constituency of Peterborough, represented at the House of Commons by Stewart Jackson.[2]

Demography

At the time of the 2001 census, Bretton parish had a population of 12,689 people – 6,160 males and 6,529 females living in 5,191 households.[3]

Education

Bretton has a number of primary schools; Bretton Woods Community School was closed and replaced by The Voyager School in 2007. The Primary Schools include Sacred Heart Primary School

Industry and commerce

Budget Insurance, one of Peterborough's biggest employers, is based in Bretton. The Thomas Cook Group head office is also in Bretton.

Culture

Bretton is home to The Cresset, a theatre which also contains other leisure facilities, a library, a church and shops.[4]

Sport

Peterborough Ice Arena, home to the Peterborough Phantoms ice hockey team, is in Bretton.[5]
